ServiceNow and OpenAI announced a multi-year strategic partnership on January 20 that will integrate OpenAI’s frontier models. Including GPT-5.2 directly into ServiceNow’s enterprise workflow platform. ServiceNow to deliver autonomous AI agents capable of executing tasks across IT service management, customer support, and business operations without requiring custom development.

Native AI Integration Across Business Systems

The partnership grants ServiceNow customers preferred access to OpenAI’s advanced models embedded within the platform. This integration allows AI agents to perform end-to-end actions rather than simply provide recommendations. Engineers from both companies will collaborate to develop custom solutions aligned with enterprise needs. This agreement eliminates the bespoke development costs that have slowed AI adoption among Fortune 500 companies.

ServiceNow handles over 80 billion workflows annually across its customer base. The addition of OpenAI’s capabilities will enable the platform to orchestrate AI-driven automation in IT management, HR, & customer service functions. The companies indicated that joint technical teams will work together in coming months to address specific business use cases.

Speech-to-Speech Voice Agents and Legacy System Support

ServiceNow plans to develop real-time speech-to-speech voice agents powered by OpenAI models. These agents will listen, process requests, and trigger actions directly within workflows without text intermediation. The technology aims to break through language barriers for global enterprises managing multilingual operations.

The partnership will also leverage OpenAI’s computer use capabilities, allowing AI agents to interact with legacy systems where traditional application programming interfaces are unavailable. Amit Zavery, ServiceNow’s president and chief product officer, explained that the models can learn to operate older systems like mainframes and integrate results back into modern workflows. This addresses a persistent challenge for enterprises maintaining critical infrastructure on outdated platforms.

Rising Competition in Enterprise AI Market

The ServiceNow-OpenAI agreement arrives as major enterprise software vendors accelerate their AI agent deployments. Salesforce has integrated AI agents into its Agentforce 360 platform through expanded partnerships with both OpenAI and Anthropic. SAP and Workday are similarly embedding autonomous agents into their finance and human resources software.

For OpenAI, the deal supports its push into enterprise markets as the company works to increase revenue and offset substantial compute costs. OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap described the partnership as bringing agentic AI into workflows that are secure, scalable, and designed for measurable business outcomes. The Wall Street Journal reported that the agreement includes a revenue commitment from ServiceNow, with the final value determined by customer adoption rates.

AI Assistants to Autonomous Agents

This partnership signals a fundamental shift in enterprise software from conversational AI assistants to autonomous agents that execute real business tasks. As companies move beyond AI pilots to production deployments, the integration of frontier models into established workflow platforms could accelerate adoption by reducing technical barriers. The focus on governance, auditability, and compatibility with legacy systems addresses practical concerns that have slowed enterprise AI implementation. However, industry surveys suggest companies may need six years or longer to realize substantial returns on their AI investments, indicating that widespread transformation remains a gradual process despite technical advances.
