Workers possessing AI capabilities now command significantly higher salaries while organizations struggle to fill positions requiring these rapidly evolving skills.
Explosive Growth in AI Job Requirements
Job postings requiring artificial intelligence skills reached 628,000 in 2024, with the percentage of all listings demanding at least one AI competency increasing from 0.5 percent in 2010 to 1.7 percent in 2024, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s analysis of labor market data. More recent data shows job postings requiring AI skills jumped 73% from 2023 to 2024, then surged another 109% from 2024 to 2025.
The number of workers in occupations where AI fluency is explicitly required has grown sevenfold in just two years, expanding from approximately 1 million in 2023 to around 7 million in 2025, according to workforce research. Natural language processing had the largest growth in demand among technical AI skills, with a 155% increase in job postings mentioning NLP capabilities, while vacancy rates for NLP specialists hit 15% in 2024, double the national average.
